Fire Station Distance

Fire station distance is the travel distance or response time from the nearest responding fire station to a property, a core driver of fire insurance rating.
Shorter response distances mean faster suppression and lower expected fire loss. Most rating systems use thresholds (for example, within 5 road miles of a responding station) as a condition for favorable fire classes.
Because actual response depends on the road network, distance is best measured as drive distance or time rather than straight-line. It combines with hydrant proximity and the responding department’s capability to set the protection class.
