Public Protection Classification (PPC)
Also known as: ISO fire protection class
The Public Protection Classification (PPC) is an ISO rating from 1 to 10 that grades a community’s fire-protection capability and strongly influences fire insurance premiums.
ISO evaluates a community’s fire department, water supply (including hydrants), and emergency communications, then assigns a class from 1 (best) to 10 (essentially unprotected). Lower classes generally mean lower fire premiums.
A property’s effective protection class depends on its distance to a recognized fire station and hydrant and on the responding department’s resources — which is why those individual measurements appear in underwriting reports.
